You see it everywhere. The 3-Day Potty Training Program! How to Potty Train your boys, your girls, your toddlers, your DOG in just 3 days. But does it work? Can you really potty train your child in 3 days? The answer isn’t as simple as it seems.
Can your child be potty trained in 3 days?
Any quick google search on potty training will leave you believing that you can easily potty train your child in three days. Just pick a day, start potty training, and two days later you’re done.
But is it really possible?
There are a variety of books and “programs” about potty training in three days, but the common theme is this: you stop everything for three days and focus solely on potty training. You might increase liquids. There might be some naked time in the house. There are going to be LOTS of accidents – prepare yourself for them.
But in the end, after 72 hours, you will be able to declare your child potty trained.
Declaring a child potty trained is a lot like saying your child sleeps through the night.
There are many definitions of these “titles” that vary from parent to parent.
One friend might proudly say her child is sleeping through the night because she only has to get up twice to feed him.
Another might say that her son sleeps through the night because he sleeps soundly from Midnight until 5 am.
And yet another might complain that their child isn’t sleeping through the night because she’s only snoozing for eight hours instead of the 12 that she needs.
There’s a long scale of success that varies from parent to parent.
The same is true with potty training.
Some declare their child potty trained because they only have a few accidents each day. Others will proudly boast about a lack of accidents, but that’s only because they’ve been putting their child on the potty every 20 minutes for the past three months.
The true definition of potty training is that your child is able to independently listen to their body. He or she is able to use the toilet to pee and poop without your assistance. And accidents are very rare and often related to unique circumstances.
So can a child be truly potty trained in just 3 days based on the official definition?
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a try.
Trying the 3-Day Method
Children that are the most successful in the 3-day potty training method are typically older (at least 3 years of age.) They are showing most – if not all – of the signs of readiness. And they really, really want to be potty trained.
Do a quick internet search and find the 3-day method that looks right to you and give it a try. Just be sure to keep your expectations in check.
The 3-day method can be a great and helpful way to jumpstart your potty training journey. While your child may not be 100%, fully potty independent within 72 hours, he or she will most likely be well on their way to ditching the diapers forever.
