Potty Training Rewards

Potty training is a big deal for you and your child, and using a reward system is a great way to promote potty training success.

1. Sticker chart
There’s nothing more exciting to a young child than choosing a sticker and placing it in a particular spot. And seeing those stickers accumulate over time is a great visual reminder of what a great job they’re doing!

2. Potty treats jar
Grab a jar and fill it with a favorite small candy. Whether it’s suckers, jellybeans, M&Ms or Skittles, you may find that a little candy can go a long way towards encouraging your child to stay dry during the day.

3. Potty prizes
If candy isn’t your thing, head to the dollar store and create a potty prize box. Every time your child pees or poops on the potty, he gets to grab a new toy to play with.

Or, offer larger gifts as an incentive for earning stickers on their sticker chart. Maybe they get to pick out a toy at the store over the weekend if they use the potty all week.

4. Get creative
Be creative in your rewards to find out what motivates your child the most.

If your child loves to have friends over, maybe they get to host a playdate on Saturday if they stay dry all day on Friday.

Or maybe they get to pick what the family eats for dinner if they only have one accident during the day. You know your child better than anyone, and you know what will motivate them to use the potty.

Advice from Parents: Start Small!
As you’re deciding what rewards to offer for potty training, parents who have been there before you will advise you to start small. If your child is thrilled with the “reward” of flushing the toilet every time he uses it, then there’s no need to waste your money on toys or candy.

If your daughter is so excited that she gets one piece of candy when she pees, there’s no need to offer her 10 pieces.

Start small and slowly increase your rewards if necessary to motivate your kids. This will save you from making a trip to the toy store every single time your child poops on the potty!
